unfortunately along the coast, stargazing isn't the best.
low altitude, haze and the almost always present marine layer are all negative factors.
its a ride, but you should check out the SDAA site.

Go out by Borrego Springs or Ocotillo Wells and you will see many more celestial bodies than you ever will along the coastal areas. When living in Pacific Beach I got a weekend getaway place out in Ocotillo Wells. The first night I spent out there I was blown away by the amount of stars I saw and what's really awesome are the numbers of shooting stars I saw.
The reason is that the air is so dry and clear, not to mention the non-interference of city lights.
That part of the desert is only a 90 minute drive from SD and an hour and 53 minutes from Carlsbad if you take Highway 78.
