Why isn't the sound loud on my mp3 player in my car?

I just bought a Sony Walkman mp3 player and when I hook it up to my Aux cable in my car (Griffin Technology Aux cable from Best Buy) I have to turn the volume on my mp3 player all the way up, then my car volume way high and then it finally puts out sound. Is there something wrong with the cable or my mp3 player? How do I make it so I don't have to blast the volume just to hear anything?

Well you will always need to turn the volume on the MP3 player all the way up because that is the line going to the stereo. Once that is done though the volume at the stereo should be normal just like a CD or the radio would be. Do you have a case on your MP3 player? It may not be letting the cable plug in all of the way. If that is not it, I would try exchanging that cable.

Different audio devices put out different levels of signal. If you have a Digital Multimeter you can easily measure this by touching the red lead of the DMM to the middle tip of the AUX cable and the black lead to the outside metal jacket on the aux cable. Then reading the AC voltage while playing a 60 Hz test tone on the MP3-player/CD-player/Phone/Laptop/anything with aux output.

The value you read will be the RMS voltage output of the device. The lower the voltage output of the device, the higher you will need to set the volume on your deck to compensate. With my MP3 player (Sansa Fuze) I need to turn the volume on my deck to 40/50 to just hear the music normally, while with my friends Iphone 4 and the volume set to 40/50 is pretty loud. And if I use my CD player or USB input, 40/50 is ear piercingly loud.

    Hope this helped.
