What kind of animals do they have at animal shelters?

I was looking to get a new pet but i am not sure what i am going to get. I was thinking of going to the pet store but then i thought of all the animals in the shelters that were in need. Can someone give me a list of the animals that are in shelters because i don't really know anything about them. Do they only have shelters for dogs and cats or do they have them for other animals too?

Depends on the shelter. Some only take in dogs or cats, others will take in any type of animal. There are also rescues that are specific to particular types of animals as well. For example, you'll often find horse rescues, rabbit rescues, bird rescues, reptile rescues, and rescues which are specific to certain breeds of dog, among many others. You can usually find almost any type of animal you would like in need of a home if you take the time to look. Try http://www.petfinder.com/index.html for starters, and do some research to figure out what type of pet you really do want. Once you decide that, you can google the type of animal, rescues, and your location to find somewhere near you that may specialize in that type of pet.

It depends on the shelter. Some only have dogs, some only have guinea pigs, some only have rats and some will take anything but you can get ANY animal from a shelter you may just have to look around.

Most shelters have dogs and cats (some are species specific). Some also have rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, gerbils, ferrets, birds, fish, reptiles and other species.

You need to do research on any pet before you get it. I highly doubt a shelter is going to adopt out a pet to you if you are not prepared for one. Decide on a species and go from there. There is little worse than someone who gets a pet they aren't prepared for and end up taking it back after a few weeks.

It depends on the shelter near you but sometimes they can have dogs, cats, birds, hamsters, rabbits, ferrets, some reptiles and guinea pigs. Usually your local humane society will have a more variation to the animals you can adopt, but look on petfinder.com and put in your zip code. It will show you all the animals at a shelter near you.

Go online to petfinder.com and enter your area code. That will show you a list of many of the animals in shelters near you. Most shelters are dogs and cats only, but there are also many that have small animals and larger ones like horses.

every shelter is different. I worked at one for 5 years. We always had cats and dogs and usually had rabbits.. sometimes we had hamsters, ferrets, birds, and guinea pigs. once we got a snake.

depends where you live - our city wasnt too big.

    go and look!

here is info about adopting from a shelter - please do not buy from a pet store
