Do Conservatives & Republicans think our Founding Fathers thought the U.S. Constitution was a perfect document?

"Happy for us that when we find our constitution defective and insufficient to secure the happiness of our people, we can assemble with all the coolness of philosophers and set it to rights, while every other nation on earth must have recourse to arms to amend or to restore their constitutions." --Thomas Jefferson to C. W. F. Dumas, 1787. ME 6:295, Papers 12:113

"I go further, and affirm that bills of rights, in the sense and to the extent in which they are contended for, are not only unnecessary in the proposed Constitution, but would even be dangerous. They would contain various exceptions to powers not granted; and on this very account, would afford a colorable pretext to claim more than were granted. For why declare that things shall not be done which there is no power to do?" Alexander Hamilton, Federalist No. 84, 1788

Update:

“I confess that there are several parts of this Constitution which I do not at present approve, but I am not sure I shall never approve them. For having lived long, I have experienced many instances of being obliged by better information, or fuller consideration, to change opinions even on important subjects, which I once thought right, but found to be otherwise.”

— Benjamin Franklin, 1787

I think what conservatives don't understand is that a constitution is a living, evolving document. It does not mean one has to remain stuck in the social and economic environment of the 18th century.

I think the "founding fathers" would be surprised that black men, and women of any color have the right to vote (women only got the vote in the early 1900s, by the way!). I really, really wish people would stop viewing health care as a commodity and profit-making BUSINESS. There is nothing communist or socialist about guaranteeing all your citizens good, affordable, available, comprehensive health care. No one -- NO one -- should be forced to suffer or die because they cannot afford the necessary treatment. No one should have to sell the family home or go bankrupt to cover medical costs. Canada, France, Belgium, The United Kingdom -- most of western Europe, in fact -- all provide forms of universal health care which, while not perfect (what is?) are far, far better (and a lot less expensive) than what currently must be privately purchased in the U.S. And, the last time I looked, education WAS a state issue.

over 10,000 amendments have been proposed and only 27 actually made it to the constitution.

Thats why Conservatives love this document so much. Because it's old and it's almost impossible to change.

They'll go on and say that they agree it's not a perfect document. But whenever we do something that violates it, even though the SUPREME COURT interprets it, not the GOP, they'll bash us.

Just bash us everytime something little gets violated. But then again you agree its not a perfect document.

Do you guys have any idea how hard it is to amend a constitution. Its just more politics getting in the way of change! =/

If the Founders thought it was a perfect document, there wouldn't be a procedure written into the Constitution to amend it.

the purpose of having a way to amend it is that the Founders did not consider the document to be final, or necessarily perfect. It was, however, the best they could do and a very fine best it is.

Source(s): what galls me is when people try to change the Constitution's meaning without amending it. That's plain arrogant.

It's not a perfect document nothing is

But this is the best the world has done

Nope, that's why they included an amendment procedure therein. What would make us extremely happy would be if leftists would start using that process instead of imposing their will via judicial fiat.

Nope, and I have no idea where you got that idea from.

That's probably why they defined a procedure for amending it.

  • 1 decade ago

If they did they would not have needed to define the amendment process.

It is a perfect document and is infallible and should not be changed it's never been changed since 1776 it are fact o'reilly told me
