How to straighten, very kinky hair?

My son wants to try to straighten his VERY curly hair. His hair is fine, very kinky, and a lot of it too. He's been told to use a flat iron. I'm a skeptic. I don't think his hair will stay straight and he may damage his hair, even on low heat. It will only last until it gets washed, or sweaty...

Any experience and advice will help....thanks.

Update:

Thank-you all for your great answers! It's good to know the brands of irons and cost as well as the chances it will work.

If your son is like most boys, he probably wont use a flat iron everyday if you buy him one. He'll probably use it once or twice, realize how time consuming it is, and then be done with it. So I recommend booking him an appointment at a local salon for a relaxer. Relaxers are now very mild and non-damaging to the hair if used correctly. It's worth it to take the money that you would have spent on a flat iron, and use it for a professional to relax his hair for him, so that all he has to do is wash it and let it dry. No extra work required. Just be sure to call a few different salons and go with the one that sounds most knowledgeable on chemical straightening.

Flat ironing works, but TRUST ME !!! -don't go on the cheap side when you buy it !!! THATS WHEN YOUR HAIR GETS DAMAGED !! or else theres no problem ! And if you buy one thats good quality it'll not only last A LOT longer, but it'll take A LOT less time, less struggle and it just does a WAY BETTER job :D Haha, I think you got the point ^^ I personally use Amika, but I heard Chi is also a good brand :) To give you an aproximate, it costs about 100 to 200 $ (That's why you might want to consider it a birthday or christmas present ^^) Another think that helps is Hair Serum :D I use HerStyler :) A little goes a long way !

Well, with all that said, I wish you and your son good luck ;)

You could always go to your hairstylist and ask their advice on this. They are experienced on these kind of matters. Make sure you have a really good hairstylist you can trust and really enjoys doing hair and is not all about the money. As far as a hot iron, you can find a product to spray in the hair that is a heat protection and try the low setting.

Get the straight perm! You can go to about any salon and get it. It's like a perm but instead of making your hair curly it makes it pin straight! Good luck!

if you are going to try to flat iron it, use a CHI. works wonders on very tight hair.
