Today My Mom Asked Me....?

Why do some motorcycles have their handlebars way up high, with the hand grips out and above a riders head?

I could not answer.

So I come to Yahoo Answers for the answer.

Why?

It's just personal preference. Apehangers are just a style that some people like though they aren't the greatest for handling. The opposite would be clip ons which are really low and ideal for high speed riding. Great for handling but fairly uncomfortable after any sort of long distance.

The tall handlebars also known as ape-hangers, are a styling statement. A stupid statement I might add and if bars are above a rider's shoulders, are illegal.

I want to build a chopper with a suicide shifter and ape hangers so tall that you need to ride standing up and your arms over your head. The ultimate wind on your body machine. Shifting and braking will be a challenge because my bike will only have a rear brake pedal and a foot controlled clutch. No front brakes on this machine. Coming to a stop will be quite an experience.

They are called ape hangers. With a sleeveless vest, they keep your armpits out in the cooling breeze, so you won't stink when you slide up and put the moves on a foxy twist.
