Gauge of wire make any difference when connecting powered sub to receiver ?
Hi, I just bought a powered sub and was wondering if the gauge of a single RCA audio cable makes any difference when not delivering power to the sub woofer.
Its my understanding that a thicker gauge wire will only make a difference when delivering power to your speakers and since the amplifier is built in to the sub the wire won't be sending any power between the sub and receiver.
Right now I have a 7.2m cable with 24 gauge wire. Should I consider a thicker cable?

Hi Kunami....Save your money...the 24gauge is ample...It is not warranted to use a large cable hence,it is only carrying the signal from your receiver to the sub woofer's amplifier....cheers!

The quality of shielding etc is more important here. The reason it makes a difference in speaker wire is because a typical speaker is around 4 to 8 ohms. A 7.2 m cable of 24 gauge will have a relatively high resistance compared especially to 4 ohms. If for example the cable resistance was 0.5 ohms and the speaker 4 ohms, it represents over 10% of the total thus less than 90% of the signal is across the speaker. The typical input impedance of a subwoofer amplifier however ranges from 10,000 to 50,000 ohms. If you have the signal traveling through 0.5 ohms on the way to a load of 10,000 ohms it's a much less significant signal drop than in the case of the 4 or 8 ohm speaker.
Generally better cables having better shielding will also have a slightly higher gauge wire with 22 ga being very typical but the bigger difference between two such wires comes from the better shielding than the wire gauge difference.
