Is Peyton Manning just unlucky?

Even with one Super Bowl I think he was the best QB of the last decade. I just think he did not have much luck as Brady had.

Until Dungy came, the Colts Defense always stinked and if Manning did not throw for 300 yards, 3 TDs, and less than 1 int every playoff game the Colts season would be over. Whereas, Brady had the advantage of playing for a strong defense and having a strong coach in Belichick.

The Pats Super Bowl in 2001 and 2005 was mostly due to the great defense. Eagles and Rams scored less in the Super Bowl than their season average. Brady has not won a Super Bowl since 2005 because many of the great defensive players on those earlier Pats teams like Seymour, Harrison, Ty Law, Bruschi were out of the league or declined. The year Brady missed the entire season the Pats were able to win 11 games showing Manning was more important to his team.

I also think the Saints onside kick last year basically killed the Colts momentum and resulted in them with one less possession which cost them.

I think that Manning could have easily had 4 Super Bowls but just like Lebron he did not have the luck.

Because he's been in the league so long teams no how to beat him. Short passes, run the ball, keep the clock ticking. His offense has the least amount of possessions 4 of the last 5 years compared to all other 31 teams. Teams play keep away from him. He got 3 possessions during the second half yesterday and got points out of every drive. His chances are more limited than any other qb in the game regardless of what some believe. That in my opinion is the biggest difference.

I don't think luck has anything to do with it. When it comes to the NFL, it is all about how the team and players execute to the point where they can win. I think in the case of Peyton Manning, statistically there is no denying that he is one of the greatest QB's to ever play the games. He is the first player to reach 50,000+ passing yards in the fastest and shortest time span. I bring up that statistic because its one of the many that he has accomplished. But I think in regards to your question, you have to look at the teams that he is having troubles against. There are two teams that seem to give Peyton the most trouble, the Pats and Chargers.

Since 2000 the Pats have a 9-6 record against the Colts and this includes the playoffs. The Chargers on the opposite side have won 5 out of the last 6 games against Peyton Manning giving him a 1-5 record against the Chargers including the playoffs.

I bring those statistics up because it proves Peyton is losing to teams because obviously the teams know his strengths and weaknesses. Its not a question of whether or not Manning has the ability. He's been on the downward spiral (in terms of production) in part due to injuries to his receivers, and because teams such as the Chargers and Pats, understand how to stop Manning. In other words, Manning is having less of an opportunity to be successful (in winning championships) because opposing defense understand how to break his offensive rhythm. So sure one could say that Manning is "unlucky" but I don't think its true. Look at the Jets, they were able to stop Manning from getting comfortable and take away his vertical passing attack. Bottom line? Teams now have an answer for Manning.

I don't think its luck. You are right, its a team effort, but I think Brady is better than Manning. Brady won his 3 Super Bowls with no flashy running back (the best he ever had was Antwone Smith, and a washed up Corey Dillon) and no premier receivers, and a decent, not great, defense.

I think the main difference between Manning's success and Brady's is Brady just seems to have better instincts. Maybe he got that from so many years with Belichick. Manning reminds me of the kid in school who studies and studies and works his *** off for an A-, and Brady's the kid who put in effort, not near as much, but natural ability and focus got him an A. Its not fair, but its the way it is.

Manning is good but not the greatest.
