I bought a laptop at a garage sale and it apparently has no hard drive...?

Instead, it has two dvd/cd rom drives. When I turn the computer on, the Windows XP Professional OS logo comes up. How is this possible without a hard drive? The computer then shuts itself off. I assume that the person I bought it from used an external hard drive to boot from, but now that the external drive is not present, it can't boot. Am I correct in this assumption? I only paid $10 for it, so it's no big loss, but I would like to get it to work. How can I do this?

Update:

It is a Pentium 4 with a 2.8ghz processor. I am also concerned because I get through the boot sequence and it shuts down. I like to tinker with things, so taking it to someone to fix is not going to happen.

Buy the correct type of hard drive and install it internally.

If it has a P4 processor or above it may be usable if it has a Pentium, P2 or P3 it may not be worth buying a HD for it.

Google the Make and Model for further information.

PS the Battery is most likely dead also.

take it to the geek squad over at best buy. if they try to rip you off for it ( more than 350 $$) then leave that computer to rot in the dust. If they say they can put a hard drive and fix the problem for an amount that seems ok to you, then pay it and you got a computer for you

It seems you got what you paid for. And better yet, you learned a good lesson.
