Why do atheists have the highest suicide rates?

So sad. Maybe those of us who have the answer are not giving as much hope as we should to those who have no hope. We know God's love and the power of His word. Atheists don't. Their hurt and sense of hopelessness is beyond our comprehension unless we have been there.

I believed that atheists believe in their own strength, and as always, that human strength is fallible. And when that strength failed, so will be the person in despair without hope anylonger.

We humans like to think that we are so advanced that we do not need God. The bad news for us is - without him our life is futile and hopeless. We have no hope beyond the grave without God. But because of God, and because he loves us (John 3:16) and because of Jesus Christ who died that we might live, we have hope , both now and forever. This is the central teaching of the gospel, and why the word gospel means "good news"! None of us needs to despair as Jesus Christ is the answer for the emptiness and meaningless lives that we experience apart from God.

If a lawnmower suddenly began cutting off its own wheels and slicing into its engine block, that mower is broken, losing its design function in preference for self-destruction. Similarly, when a human being begins to attack itself, the person has lost its design function--loving obedience to the creator and care for others--in the self-destruction of insanity.

In 2004, the American Journal of Psychiatry reported the following:

“ Religiously unaffiliated subjects had significantly more lifetime suicide attempts and more first-degree relatives who committed suicide than subjects who endorsed a religious affiliation. Unaffiliated subjects were younger, less often married, less often had children, and had less contact with family members. Furthermore, subjects with no religious affiliation perceived fewer reasons for living, particularly fewer moral objections to suicide. In terms of clinical characteristics, religiously unaffiliated subjects had more lifetime impulsivity, aggression, and past substance use disorder. No differences in the level of subjective and objective depression, hopelessness, or stressful life events were found.[6]

Fewer reasons for living, fewer moral objections to suicide. When you see yourself as an accidental product of blind material processes, without value or purpose in a meaningless world, there is little or no barrier to self-murder.
