Running a rescue, where to start?

I have been going back and forth with what I want to do with the rest of my life recently. The one thing that is concrete is that one day I would like to have my own animal sanctuary. I was hoping someone here could give me some advice on the subject. How does one start out? Do you need a separate job or can you run a rescue full time? Any help is greatly appreciated. I really don't know where to start. I have been studying Biology and was planning on doing something with Zoology, but now I think I want to do something more with companion animals. (Serious answers only please.)

Update:

I do understand that it will be very hard work. I am prepared to do whatever I can to help. I do have volunteer experience at shelters and I have seen how cruel people can be to animals. I believe that caring for animals is why I am here. It is not about making money for me, it is about doing what I was meant to do. I would rather be satisfied with my life, than to make a lot of money.

Speaking as a breeder of pit bulls, I can say with all sincerity and kindness that I hope you know what you're getting into.

You'd need lots of property, lots of money, lots of help, and lots of energy. You might try volunteering at a shelter or humane society first. You could become a foster parent and go from there. From what I've seen of rescues, it's a full time job with part time pay...

Good luck to you and God bless.
