Need ideas for a good engineering college laptop.?

I am an Engineering student and I am wanting to upgrade to a better laptop. Right now I am running a HP Pavilion dv6000 series with base specs. I am wanting to upgrade to something that can run things such as Solidworks, Sims 3, Minecraft, Bioshock, and not lag as terribly as my current computer does. Ideally I would like a tablet PC, but I know that is hard to combine with the better graphics card and maintain a college budget. I'm looking to spend somewhere between $800-$1200. So are there any computer guru's out there that could point me in the right direction? Currently I'm leaning towards Asus or HP. Again, main needs are a good graphics card, good battery life, and if possible, a tablet PC as well.

Thanks!

Update:

The gaming is mainly a recreational thing. I'm not an avid W.O.W. player or anything. I mainly need better graphics for CAD and Solidworks.

All other Mac v PC arguments aside, have you thought what happens if an Engineering teacher wants you to run a Mac only Engineering program? With a Mac, you can dual boot to Windows (or run it in a virtual machine). With a PC, you don't have the option of dual-booting to Mac.

I have a few that I would recommend and they have great price tags:

Sony VAIO VPC-F133FX/H 16.4-Inch Laptop (Grey)

    16.4-inch LED-backlit display with 1600 x 900 resolution

1.73 GHz Intel Core i7-740QM processor

500 GB SATA hard drive (5400 RPM)

4 GB of installed DDR3 RAM (1333 MHz; 8 GB maximum)

NVIDIA GeForce GT 425M with 1 GB of dedicated DDR3 video memory

Watch Blu-ray Disc movies in crystal clear resolution

Wireless-N Wi-Fi (802.11b/g/n) for ultra-fast connectivity to home and business networks.

    Built-in stereo speakers

Don't do it man, Computer games will be the death of you in engineering school! :D I'd suggest an Asus though, probably the best bang for your buck.
