How would a being prove it is in fact God?

I can't think of even one way. Knowing a lot and being powerful doesn't make you God. It just means you know more than me and are more powerful than me (or anyone I know of). What if it's just a super powerful alien? How would I know?

Update:

I'm an Atheist, if anyone is wondering.

Also: I was thinking the definition is the problem. God is a poorly defined concept, which leaves a lot of room for deception by any sufficiently powerful being.

I usually work with the definition that God is the originator of the Universe. There would be no way to prove that.

To be honest, were some being to appear and make the earth stand still, make the sun change colors one at a time until it had covered every color from red to violet, restore the severed limbs of quadriplegics, then proclaim that it was God incarnate, I would laugh at it and tell it that its cheap parlor tricks did not impress me at all, that it was nothing more than a fake and a snake oil salesman. How would a being prove it is in fact God? Simply put, it couldn't because it wouldn't be.

This may get very interesting. Only the first one is closed, but the next two are closely related and are but my first steps in doing exactly what I asked about doing in the first one.

Some people claim all faith is blind, but my faith is a carefully considered, carefully reasoned and very reasonable, rational and defensible faith. Were atheist Stephen Roberts (1901-1971) standing in front of me this moment, I would say back to him, “I contend that we are both men of faith. I just have faith in one more thing than you do, and for very good reason. When you fully understand why I disdain all the devisers of superstitions and dismiss the gods of vain imaginings, you will understand why I believe in my God, and you will believe also." -- B. How do you know Chris Angel is a real magician. You don't. You instantly doubt because there is no such thing as magic right? That and he's selling a box set telling you how to do his magic tricks. :) Proof is a matter of a civilized mind. The more educated you are the more resistant you are to faith. If you have the mind of a simple back woods teen, it would be easy to prove its god. Thats why cults snare so many teens. You would be able to prove it was god because he/she/it is supposedly the all knowing, wisest, and most powerful being ever. On any level in any society, you would be that country bumpkin by comparison. If you lack the faith when you meet god, then it isn't really god because you wouldn't have a doubt. And magic does exist as a force of science completely and totally misunderstood and unexplainable. Once it becomes explainable we call it science. Proof is a matter of perception in these instances.

What difference would it make if he was a super-powered alien or god? I'd be impressed with either one.

Have him break the laws of physics, would be one way. Or time travel.

I only know one person who has actually met god, although I'm certain there are others who have.

You're question is valid. I honestly don't know how a person recognizes god when they make full contact.

    Again....great question!!!

It comes down to your definition of god, and what characteristics gods possess.

    Omnipotence?

    Omniscience?

Both these can be tested and demonstrated.

If it can fly, I'll praise it as a God.

  • Because God speaks to you in your spirit, not in your mind. You'll know when it happens.

He will do just that pretty soon. Keep looking up.
