How long is the roast chicken I bought fresh?

I bought a whole roast chicken (hot) at the supermarket. It says it must be sold by 1/12/2011. So how long can I leave it in the fridge before I have to throw it away? The 13th? The 14th?

How are you defining "fresh"? Sell by dates usually have to do with quality more than safety-as long as it's properly packaged and kept cold, the chicken should be safe through the week. If it worries you, you can also freeze it for later use and keep it up to 6 months that way. I never had one last more than 3-4 days, though.

any cooked food using common sense good for 3 days. best to freeze what you cant eat which lasts up to 6 mos. also think of creative ways to eat chicken...chicken salad, chicken soup, diced chicken for salad, tacos or stir fry, sliced chicken for sandwiches.

Up to three days, longer if its kept in the freezer (three to six months).
