In lightroom what's the difference between catalogs and collections?
I've been using photoshop lightroom 3 for well over a month now and i'm beginning to get the hang of it. But on thing always bugged me about it... what are catalogs and collections? i know they're there to somehow organise where i get the imported pictures from but i don't know how they work. I've spent the last month playing round with them and i'm always loosing photos somewhere cause there in another catalog or something and it gets frustrating. So any advice on what they are and how to properly use them would be much appreciated thanks :)

Lightroom never changes your original photos and keeps track of all your editing in a database file - the catalog. You do not have to make multiple catalogs, you can have one catalog and never worry about that. The file is a .lrcat file.
Collections are a way to organize your photos (in your one catalog) separately from the file/folder structure of the operating system. When you import photos into Lightroom you organize them in folders the same as on your hard drive. Then you can make subsets of these files using Collections. For example, if you use the star rating feature of Lightroom you could make a collection of all your 5-star photos.
I only have one catalog and it works fine for me - you can use separate catalogs too if it helps you organize your photos.
