Children and BAD TV NEWS?

Do you let your (under 12) children watch the news when it is covering stories like the children incinerated at Waco, the children Bombed in the Oklahoma City office building, and the nine year old who was shot and killed last week in Arizona?

Yes, my children watch the news with me and my husband every night for half an hour, the real news, not that "which celebrity is dating who" garbage. Some of the stories can be upsetting, so we discuss the stories with them and talk about why they happened, how unlikely it is that they will ever happen to them, and how they can keep them from happening. None of my children were alive for the Waco incident or the Oklahoma City bombing, but my oldest knows about them. He understands that there are confused people in the world who sometimes think they are doing things that are good, but they are actually very bad and they hurt a lot of people. I think its important that my children know about these things, if you hide history and sweep it under the rug, it will just happen again. When I think about it, my 9 year old son was the same age as the victim, he is only 13 years younger then the shooter. Its important that children learn about these things young so they wont repeat the mistakes that were made in the future, I cant help but think that if someone had taught the shooter how wrong it was or noticed the signs in the shooter and stepped in, that would have never happened.

Well I was always allowed to watch the news But when I was twelve that it when I heard about the Oklahoma city bombing bombing and I cried every night until I forgot about it. I was traumatized by it. But I think it depends on what story it is. I think that kids ten and up should know about the things that are happening in the world so the will be prepared when they are older. But over exposure will hurt the child later. I say just be careful with what story it is. All the ones you asked about in your question would wait until they are at least ten though.

    Anyways I hope I helped :)

I would say no. I say this because children can digest stuff really quickly. And the last thing you would want is your child going to school and telling the other kids what they saw or said. They might start to believe that it is okay to do stuff like that. And for little kids they might go imitating what they saw on tv and it could spread to other children. So overall my answer would be no. Do not let them watch stuff like that.

As long as they understand that the news is a report of things that RARELY happen, not a reflection of normal life i don't see a problem with it, but they would get a better idea of what the world is really like by riding their bikes or running errands with you than they would get by watching the news

If I didn't watch the late showing of the news, I still wouldn't let my children watch it . If I wanted my children to know things like that, I'd let them watch R-rated movies .
