How is the economy in Wichita, KS?

I am interested in moving to Wichita mainly because of the low cost of living and it's not as crowded as the current city I live in. Another reason why I would like to live there is because of the relatively low unemployment rate (8.4%). The articles I've read claim the economy is not as bad as other cities in the country and it's slowly improving.

But it's hard to believe the media these days. I would like to get your opinion if you live in Wichita or in any other city/town in Kansas. What do you think the economy is like over there?

It depends on what type of job. Wichita's airline manufacturing base has been gutted and that accounts for the relatively high unemployment. The oil and agriculture sectors are strong, although there probably aren't that many jobs in ag. I'd look at the Wichita Eagle-Beacon help wanted section online to see what kind of jobs are available.

The unemployment rate can be misleading. I'm in Manhattan. The rate here is under 5% because Manhattan is a college town and Ft. Riley is next door. The problem is that there are very few professional jobs available. There are tons of low paying jobs in health care or service (Wal-Mart, fast food) though.
