farm land prices are going up and foreign buyers are buying US farmland. What is your thought on this?
I am very uncomfortable with foreigners purchasing our farmland. If they want to send all the produce back to their country can they? Do they have to abide by our prices, taxes, etc. when selling the crops? I do not mind someone from another country buying a residence or becoming a citizen and purchasing land, but having our farm land owned by none US citizens just really does not sit right with me. I know that a lot of US land is already foreign owned, but it is mostly hotels and entertainment not our farmland. What are your thoughts on this? Do we need to be worried?

foreigners purchasing our farmland is a hedge for those nations to load up on arable land outside of their borders so they can insure a steady food supply back home.

All land in the US is subject to US law no matter who owns it, and if we should ever have a shortage of food, the government can ban exports. However it is not just the crops grown on land owned foreigners that are sold on world markets at increasing prices, All of our farmers try to maximize profits and the increases in the income of people in poor countries is increasing demand for meat which is an inefficient form of food, so the demand for food is increasing raising prices. We are also subsidizing ethanol production which is using a lot of corn, so in part it is the US government that is increasing the price of food in order to reduce the demand for oil.
What is happening is no different than US companies geting leases to drill for oil in oil rich countries.

I'm not worried because if the US government deems it to be a threat, there is a principle of law called Eminent Domain, which means the land really belongs to the United States. They can invoke this law, any time, even to US citizens, to repossess the land. So, if something happened, the US would just take it back.

farming industry is centrally planned in US (and all other developed countries) to avoid over-production, drop in prices and bankruptcy of farmers. Food security is one of the reasons for that, so no amount of foreign purchasing of unused land can endanger the US.

land expenditures between $5K and $15K according to acre in maximum areas of the country. and that's without homes. those will upload yet another $100K to $300K to the fee. kit for a small (under 10 acre farm) will fee around $20K for tillers, mowers, refrigeration, hoes, seed, seed beginning equip, a small greenhouse, harvesting equip., and so on., to commence. an even bigger farm will want a tractor ($5K to $25K) cattle expenditures comprise feed, fencing housing, water, vets, butchering, and so on..For chickens on my own assume to pay around $2500 farm artwork isn't difficulty-free artwork, lots extra stable mentally and bodily than kitchen artwork (I cooked 15 years before shifting into speciality produce farming). The pay sucks, exceedingly in the beginning up once you may assume to make around a dollar an hour. you will artwork around a hundred hours a week the 1st few years as you study the thank you to do farming. And in case you go with for to bypass small severe end (that's what it seems such as you go with for) you will could do all your guy or woman advertising and marketing (it rather is 50% of the time spent on maximum small farms advertising direct to the shopper) and it takes years to get sturdy at doing this for many folk and a minimum of two to 4 years to construct up a sustainable shopper base for each guy or woman. My suggestion is you stumble on a farm to intern on for a season or 2 before you purchase. That way you will understand if it rather is in basic terms a romantic thought or in case you actual love farming (and you will could like it because of the fact or you will burn out in a pair of years) undergo in ideas maximum folk do not make money on farming in spite of the undeniable fact that it rather is available while you're actually not in debt and might stay affordably and love working outdoors in all climate 3 hundred and sixty 5 days around.
