The retired person of independent means visa was abolished in November 2008. It is no longer possible to come to the UK EVEN if you can financially support yourself in your retirement.

You would be able to buy a property if you wished and you could potentially stay for six months of the year maximum on a visitors visa. As long as you still have family and property ties in the US, you should have no problem with that.

There are no circumstances under which you would need to give up your US citizenship even if you became a British citizen, which is not an option.

The only other current way would be if your net worth as a couple is more than £2 million, or you had £1 million in funds to invest in the UK.

Watch this space though. The current government is undertaking a major review of immigration and have said that they want to make it easier to people with money to invest in the country to get visas. What exactly that means nobody knows yet.

There is no provision for a year visa for those who own property in the UK. At best you would get a long term visa which allows multiple entry over a period of years (up to 10). No single visit can be for more than six months though, otherwise you are effectively living in the UK, not visiting.

Retirement to the UK is an option for foreign nationals over sixty who can demonstrate an income of £25,000 per year "without working", and a close connection with the UK. The 'close connection' requirement is not defined rigidly, and may, for example, be satisfied by having a close relative in the UK, previous UK residence, business connections/interests in the UK, or a strong sense of identity with the UK.

While candidates must demonstrate an income that they receive "without working", they may work at the management of their investments (including property investments) in the UK. The holding of non-executive directorships may also be possible.

Independent Means visa applications, should be made at the British Embassy/Consulate/High Commission in the candidate's country of nationality/usual residence. Successful applications usually result in the issue of a four year visa. Once a candidate has spent four years in the UK, as long as they still have the requisite income, the Home Office will normally grant indefinite leave to remain.

Independent Means visa applications usually take a few months for the Home Office Immigration Directorate to process.

Unfortunately you cannot move without a visa or a EU passport. You can do what thousands of Brits are doing every year with Florida - buy a property in Edinburgh and spend a year there and a year in the USA (tourist visas with an extension for a year are easily issued when you own a property).

    Sorry and good luck

My wife and I are both British...can we swap? Funny, I don't think either of our governments have really thought this through. The fact is if you are of independent means...I can't see the harm.... got any eligible single kids looking for a British spouse? My uncles family did a 3 year career/house swap Between London and LA back in the 70's. There is nothing to stop you buying a place and visiting, beyond that I guess you have to talk with immigration.

Wrong Brianna - as long as they can prove they would not be a burden on the state and have a regular income coming in, they can retire to Scotland or any place on the planet they can choose. If you are rich enough, you can live anywhere you want.

OP - write off to the UK embassy in Washington, I don't see a problem if you have enough pension to live on and pay for your own health insurance. (BUPA)

Best advice is to check with the UK Embassy as there's pretty stringent rules for non-EU citizens.

    Good luck,
