Is Vista causing these problems with my computer?
I got a Dell laptop two years ago with Vista. About 6 months ago, I started having problems accessing the wireless network in the house. All the other laptops in our house would connect, except the one with Vista. We spent hours on the phone with the internet company and netgear. (No answers) Finally, we took my laptop to a friends house that had a different brand modem and my computer connected. So we purchased the Belkin modem and my laptop started working properly. Now I'm noticing it is very slow, will not pick up in the back of the house, and just won't let me click on links. Sometimes I can't even download on the computer. Do you think this is related to it being a Vista program?

Vista itself is not "causing" these problems. some of it's properties might be contributing to them though. First: a clean, uncluttered hard drive might help with memory seek issues. Try cleaning any unnecessary files off your laptop, turning off any unnecessary pre-loading programs off your start up list, and de-frag your hard drive. Make sure all critical updates and optional hardware updates have been done. Also, make sure you don't have more than one firewall and/or anti virus running. Some people add separate anti spyware that can cause severe slow downs and such. Also, if you are using bloatware anti virus like Norton, McAfee, or AVG, you will see these kind of problems. Try Eset Nod Anti virus. It's the best in the world and also does not slow down your machine! Do you have enough memory? As people add software and do updates the demand for system resources increases. 4 Mb of memory is the very least you should have for Vista! Finally, be sure you don't have any virus or malware running on your laptop. Do a through system scan. If you aren't completely confident in your anti virus, go to eset.com and use their free online scanner. Finally, some connectivity problems people have with their wireless network at home is just simple interference or signal blocks. Think of those toy walkie talkies kids used to use. As long as their wasn't a building or something in the way and you were close enough, they worked fine. In the average home, just relocating, or avoiding obstacles to a clean signal path, often solves most connectivity problems. Things like wiring in the walls, refridgerators, microwaves, TVs, etc.....

I have a Vaio laptop with Vista and I've had problems with my wireless too. I don't know if it's related to Vista or the router though. What I did was reset the wireless router (button in back), re-install the hardware for the modem and it worked fine after that, it's not slow either, that could be from sharing. Is the network password protected?
My guess is if it's working on another router, the problem is the router not the laptop. If you still have problems try cleaning your register weekly to speed it up, if that doesn't work change your operating system to XP or 7, just be sure you back up all your files first. Hope this helps, good luck!

No, i do however think it has to do with the fact that your laptop may have had a wireless card that doesn't support the wireless signal you had on your older router. Now with the belkin, it may not have the signal strength that the other router had. So that might have something to do with why you can't get a signal in the back of the house or why you click links and stuff. before you accuse vista, i would ensure i have the most up to date drivers for the wireless card. I know you bought it brand new but in reality, as soon as it hits the stores shelves, its already outdated. So they may have produced new drivers for your card.
