Your question could use a bit of restructuring. I am not sure I go it? Are you saying, since Canadian teachers are now paid well, they shoud stop working side jobs and use that time to volunteer?

Well I work in the U.S., but here's a few thoughts:

    1. Define paid well. Just because salaries have increased, doesn't make them truly competitive in comparison to other professions.

    2. I am making extra money to sock away for my future. Teaching is a profession that takes a hard toll on the body (believe it or not) and is mentally taxing, and emotionally draining.

Gone are the days where people remain in the classroom for 30 years.

    3. The retirement system for teachers SUCK.

    4. Do you ask well paid doctors to volunteer? Well paid cops? Teachers are professionals who deserve to be compensated for their time. And their off time is their own.
