How do I stop updates?

My computer tries to update 20 different updates everytime I shut the computer down. I have atttempted to let them up run through, but it never does. It just keeps repeating. I went into the update site and attempted to do them one at a time but most of them won't go through. Is there a way to delete them or get it to stop? Thank you!

Update:

I went into the control panel and saw that they are continually failing to update. I tried again to do only one at a time and they still fail. I have gone through the trouble shooting directions but it wasn't very helpful. Is there something that could be blocking the updates from downloading? If I hide them will they go away, and if so does that put my computer at risk because I don't have the update. I use AVG.
