What's psychedelic music?
Hello, I'm sort of confused on what psychedelic music is. Can someone please clarify what I'm suppose to look (hear) for? I think I have a general idea on what it is but I'm not sure. For example, I know that Pink Floyd early sounds were psychedelic but from then on no more (like the Roger Waters era?)?
I'll be very grateful if you help me.
Thanks!
Another thing I don' t understand is with The Doors, their album 'Morrison Hotel' is classified as Psychedelic too but isn't more of a blues style? I'm not sure just confused, haha.

Hello there,
That is a tougher question than it seems. I have never tried to define psychedelic music. I have listened to it since the mid to late 60s. I have played it just as long. But I do not think I can define it. It is sort of a I know it when I hear it thing for me.
If you want some names of bands, songs and/or albums from the late 60s and early 70s, I can tell you what I have listened to.
I am not too fond of the rigidly defined genres that folks these days are so hung up on. They feel a need to pigeon hole bands into some genre. The Doors are an example of how that does not work. Yes, the Doors did psychedelic or acid rock stuff back in the 60s. Yes, Morrison Hotel is very bluesy. No need to be confused. Back in the 60s a band did not play just one style of rock. We were not so hung up on genres. Now, folks expect a band to only play songs that fit into the same genre. That was not the case back in the late 60s. Bands often varied their sound even within a single album. Back then you did not want everything to sound the same. You wanted to show more creativity and work in various styles, sometimes a blend of styles. So folks today probably are confused when they hear a bluesy rock song from a band that has since been labeled as psychedelic.
While I am rambling on, I may as well explain acid rock. If you listen to music of my day, we drew no distinction between acid rock and psychedelic. No difference whatsoever. We used the terms interchangeably. I think psychedelic was used because not all of that style music was LSD driven, in time, psychedelic mushrooms took the place of LSD as the drug of choice. So psychedelic became used more. I saw on here someone who had a very technical definition explaining the difference. That may fit now. But if that is in reference to my day, that is a load of BS. We used the terms interchangeably, You don't get hung up trying to figure out which 60s song is acid rock and which is psychedelic.
Later,
Hello again,
Wow. I see you got some answers while I was writing. There were none when I started. I don't think any of those definitions will fit a lot of the acid rock/psychedelic songs from the 60s. Much of it is not light and trippy. Sure some is, especially Dononvan. But you could hardly call Purple Haze, Magic Carpet Ride or Sunshine of your Lowe light and trippy.
Here is a list of 60s and 70s acid rock/'psychedelic songs I worked up for another answer. There are many more. Those are some of my favorites. Here is the list

Psychedelic music can cover many different genres of music, such as psychedelic rock, psychedelic trance, folk, pop, etc. Basically music inspired by the psychedelic culture, which usually has to do with increasing the effects of psychedelic drugs through psychedelic music. Some famous musicians that either play or include some psychedelic music is:
Jimi Hendrix
The Beatles
The Doors
Pink Floyd
MGMT
The Velvet Underground
The Rolling Stones
Shpongle
...... Even though they all do ALWAYS play psychedelic music, they all have a couple psyc songs. Like the Beatles album Magical Mystery Tour, is super psychedelic. And Pink Floyd's Dark Side Of The Moon, is pretty psychedelic as well. Check out this site to see more bands tagged as psychedelic http://www.last.fm/tag/psychedelic?ac=psyche You can also search other tags such as Psychedelic Soul, etc... whatever you want dude.

It sounds kind of trippy and groovy and floaty and it kind of just rolls off the instruments

music that floats around in your mind and makes you think what would it be if you were on LSD
- Anonymous1 decade agoSource(s): It's a blues style, but it's still an acid rock/psychedelic album for the most part.
