My nursing dog won't leave her pups long enough to eat/drink/pee?

I have a golden retriever who just had puppies a day ago, and she has only been eating and drinking when we lay the food/water right in front of her. Also, she will not get up to use the bathroom, she has been sitting in the whelping box all day and has only got up long enough to change sides. Its like shes scared something will happen to her pups. Is this normal? is their something I can do to get her to go outside?

I had another golden retriever mom before who had 2 litters, but she wouldnt do this, she would leave to use the bathroom.

also for those of you who will post on this question ranting about BYBs and fixing my pet....save your rampage...IDC....I will get my girl fixed after this litter....o yeah don't spit out all those scare tactics about how my dog is going to die....

Sounds pretty normal. Just make sure to feed and water her..in the box if that is what it takes. She should let you know when she has to go out. Especially if she is a first time momma , she may be just getting the hang of things.

If she continues to not go out, you may just have to put a lead on her and gently help her out and right back in.

    Good luck.

She is not going to die. We had a dog do the same thing. We just sort of forced our dog to go outside for a bit to use the bathroom. We took her out and then closed the doggie door for about 10 minutes and she wound up going. I wouldn't worry too much.
