haha, I assume what you actually mean is which is cheaper per pound...the better buy is the half pound of cashews if that is all that you are going to eat (because it's cheaper)...if that's really how they phrased the question, then SHAME on this math book.
So just take money per pound:
2.93 / .5 = $5.86/lb
4.19 / .75 = $5.58666666.../lb
Thus the half pound of cashews is cheaper per pound, so it's a better buy either way.

Calculate the price for a pound
A half pound of cashews for $2.93
= $2.93/ .5 = $5.86
or 3/4-pound bag for $4.19
= $4.19 / .75 = $5.59
Now you can decide - The 3/4 pound bag for $4.19 is cheaper

what you need to do is round them both up to the same value ok...so let's say you get it up to 4 amounts of 3/4 (to make it a whole number)...and make the half equal to the same as the nw 3/4 amount...
by this i mean times 3/4 x 4 to make it 3 then the value of that is $16.76
then make the 1/2 pound bag equal to 3 pounds by multiplying by 6 and that would be 3 is worth $17.58
So to sum up, try and make it so the weight is the same amount, like 1 pound, 2 pounds or whatever the question needs. Then times the money by whatever you times the weight by to get the total money value
OR
divide the individual values by their weight
2.93/(1/2)
4.19/(3/4) and choose the lowest value because that one will get the most for it's value

you need to equate both to the same size, or common denominator. If a 1/2lb bag is $2.93,then a 1lb bag is 2X that, or $5.86/lb. A 3/4 lb bag at $4.19 can be equated to a 1lb bag by dividing the price of $4.19 by 0.75 (or 3/4). It gives you a price of $5.58666/lb. Obviously the better buy is the 3/4lb bag.

Second one is a better buy. That is3/4-pound bag for $4.19. This is because if we buy the first bag with half pound cashews for $2.93 we are spending $5.86 per pound(ie. 2x2.93). If we buy second bag with 3/4pound for $4.19 we are spending only $5.586.(4/3x4.19).The difference is 5.86-5.586=0.274.

Sol First kind of cashews 1/2 lb = $2.93
1 lb = 2.93*2= $5.86.....................(i)
Second type of cashews 3/4 lb = $4.19
1 lb = $(4.19)(4/3)= 16.76/3 = 5.58.........(ii)
From (i) and (ii) second type of cashews are better/cheaper than first type...............Ans
