Why is my volt gauge reading wrong? ?
I have a 01 silverado (need to update my user name)that reads around 12 volts on the dash.I checked the charging system while running the engine AND off as well, with a multimeter and the readings came back as follows;14.78 while running --and--12.68 while engine was off.these are good readings but why is my meter saying I only have around 12 volts while the truck is on? Any help will be gladly appreciated.thank y'all in advance.

It could be a bad gauge cluster or a short in the voltage meter somewhere in the system. The only bad thing about replacing the gauge is that you will have to replace the entire cluster because it is molded into one piece. If you want a cheaper solution you can get an aftermarket one.

You checked the voltage at the battery with a multimeter correct? If those are your readings then it seems the charging system is ok. Replace the volt gauge.

If battery fully charged and alt. putting 14.78v normal. you're gauge will stay at 12v unless charge stops, will move over 12v if battery low. If you turn all electrical equipment on should drop a little at idle and raise over 12v giving gas. I'd say gauge is OK. I drive a Vette does the same as yours. Wouldn't be concerned about it.
