Is it true that no one broils food anymore?

We just bought a new gas oven and were told that the oven does not come with a broiler pan. The saleslady at Sears said that's because no one broils anymore. Is this true, or is it a plot to make you pay for one as an extra? If you don't broil any longer, what do you do instead? I can't imagine that frying a good steak could ever replace broiling.

Just an fyi, I'm hanging on to my old broiler pan and will use it in the new oven. If we weren't told this, I would have thrown it out..

Sears is notorious for "bait and switch" sales techniques. The object of this is that you have to purchase a broiler pan or purchase a grill. She does not have broiler pan in the store and it has to be back ordered to come sometime in the next 6 months and she recommends you purchase that really neat gas grill over there!

NEW OVENS DO COME WITH BROILER PANS EVERY WHERE!! Make her give you the broiler pan for no extra $$$ or return this oven to Sears and go get one else where even if it is not what you wanted or costs a bit more.

Then write up a statement and make copies of it. Send one copy to Sears HQ, KMART HQ, Better Business Bureau, and the State Attorney General. (Kmart because they bought Sears)

We must put an end to "bait and switch" sales techniques!! They are totally illegal.

I would imagine the use of the grills/BB have taken the place by many, but what you call a broiler we call a grill, amd I would be lost without mine.

Most our ovens do not have a separate grill shelf below the hob elements and we use the top element in the oven and switch the controls from bake to grill.

I would tell the lady at Sears she is full of BS, or be a little more polite.

I am with a new electric oven and all I have to do is to remember to position the shelf and rack in the pan to have the meat at the right distance from the element before I turn it on to preheat.

Grill/Broil meats, particularly those like burger patties allows the fats to drip out. I couldn't imagine frying them.

Enjoy your new oven, I hope to enjoy mine, just remember they are a new thing to learn as there will be a lot of subtle changes between that and the old one. I have found my new one brings a pot of water with the spuds in to the boil faster, and when preheating the oven it takes a lot less time.

I'm a broiling fool. i rarely if ever fry anything let alone a good steak. However, if the stove has burners at the top of the oven, you may be able to turn the heat up and use it as a broiler. Other wise, I would look for a different stove. Mine is new, just barely a year old, and I have a broiler.

My husband & I broil many things. How does one get the cheese on their "French Onion Soup" brown if you don't put it under the broiler, as well as many other things. I do believe the saleslady at Sears was wrong in telling you that.

She probably doesn't even cook and wanted to make a sale. I broil fish once a week and I just use a cookie sheet covered in foil to do it. I also use the broil to brown the tops of casseroles.
