If there is no biblical basis for the age of accountability, why do I need one for infant baptism?

Don't misunderstand me: I do think there is biblical basis for infant baptism. But if the Bible doesn't specifically talk about an age of accountability, why is the practice of infant baptism held to a higher standard?

Update:

Helper: I'm very familiar with the catechism, and I know what I believe about this question and the others I've been asking this evening. I'm asking these questions to learn how others will respond to them.

Update 2:

evablessp23: Where does the Bible say that?

Update 3:

evablessp23: second question - What pagan practices is infant baptism derived from? (It doesn't count if the exact same claim can be made about adult baptism.) And what is your source?

Update 4:

Panther: Do you actually think that Lutherans believe in works-righteousness? That's the first time I've ever been accused of *that*.

Better pass the word along to all the people who accuse us of easy-believism. On second thought, don't, since neither is true.

Have you restudied your catechism lately? See http://www.lcms.org/pages/internal.asp?NavID=2612 on this. I believe they answer your question.

Because it derived from pagan practices. The Bible doesn't support the baptism of babies. the bible states that a man be baptized after he has an understanding.Unfortunately the Catholic Church is responsible for a lot of misunderstood scriptures.

because of the way people have interpreted salvation

some believe once saved always saved

    ((the promise of gods grace))

some believe that you have to work at salvation

((that its not a free gift))

some believe that babies are born with the sins of their fathers

combine that with the need to work for your salvation

    presto..instant need for infant baptism

edit: it is not restricted to catholics either

many other christian denominations believe in infant baptism

infant baptism is a catholic practice. most Christian churches do not baptize infants...some do what is called a dedication, but it is not a baptism...
