When Did This Stupid Fashion.......?

of not admitting that you have a mongrel/mutt for a pet, but of trying to paste daft 'breed' names onto them start? Best one I saw was a question from someone wanting one of these dogs but didn't want to pay to much for it because he wasn't going to show it.

Labradoodles? Cockapoos? Don't make me laugh.

TOTALLY AGREED!!!!! I have had many mixed breed dogs. I call the "Purebred Americans"

Cockapoos have been around forever an a day but for the most part no one was really breeding them all that much. It wasn't until the Labradoodle craze hit that everyone and their mother went out and started breeding random mutts together and mixing the names together to jump on the bandwagon.

And its simply because people are too damn sensitive about the word. Seriously 5 years ago I would have never heard anyone complain about their mutt being called one. They certainly wouldn't have tried to say that their dog is no a mutt because the parents were know purebreds or that they are only a mix of two breeds and not more.

Personally I think this trend is the best thing that ever happened for puppy mills and back yard breeders. At the crappy pet store in the mall they are selling three way crosses! What the hell is that worth? The people buying these dogs just don't understand why pure breed dogs where developed in the first place. They think poodle hair is the only thing desirable, they rarely think about the dogs temperament. Otherwise they would understand that a poodle terrier cross is a bad connection. Cockapoos have been around long enough to form an actual breed. Mostly this trend is all about greed and the newest fad. These crosses have no standards, because there is no uniformity of their genetic lines. This makes reckless breeding practices acceptable. There is no way to know.

I understand this completely. Like the other answers said cockapoos have been around for ages, but there are a ton of new 'breeds' now.

For example, I own a Chihuahua/Pekingese cross. My neighbour(who happens to be a dog breeder) owns his half sister and she insists on calling them Peek-a-Chus. I, on the other hand, always call my dog either a mix breed or I explain the two breeds.

I think basically, the new 'breeds' are a way for dog breeders and backyard breeders and such to get ore money out of crossbreeds.

"cockapoos" have been bred since the 50's or 60's- its not a new concept

but the fad took off more recently when the "labradoodle" craze started- more mixes have been added to the list since then.

    ADDED

And its much easier to say "MUTT" than to call it some stupid name like "crockapoo"

maybe you have been living under a rock but these names have been around for years ... and laugh all you want, these cross breed dogs are not going away ... only becoming more and more popular ... your question is funny because you say labradoodle like it is a new word :O)

Why does it matter? It is easier than saying the entire mix of the breed. It is faster to say Labradoodle than Labrador Retriever/Poodle Mix. It is also faster to say Cockapoo than Cocker Spaniel/Poodle Mix. Who cares?

I once saw an add that was selling full pedigree labradoodles.... now that's funny.

no idea personally i would call my dog a mutt before i called it poop

Its a mix stop complaining. If people say ****-a-poo thats better then your breath saying Cocker Spaniel Mixed With Poodle.

Live with it. Now thats Annoying
