What is/was your High School like?

Hey!

So, watching various shows and reading various articles, they always stress how HARD High School is, how UNFAIR everyone is, how BAD the bullying is and how concrete the cliques are.

I'm a senior, and I just don't notice this. Sure, there are groups of friends, and some people are jerks, but for the most part everyone works together well. The top girls aren't cheerleaders, and there's a sort of companionship between the smart kids- Meaning the "nerdiest" kids are friends with the smart jocks, and admit it. Middle School was way worse- Everyone was so insecure they were positively vicious.

We're a big school for our area, but we are in a rural area- So we're considered big at 1,800 students. We're also the "Arts Magnet", meaning kids from neighboring districts are shipped in to attend an art-based program. I personally think this has contributed to the school's atmosphere because people are forced to see a lot of different people- You have all of the "Artsy" types, from the sophisticated artsy to the Anime kids who wear cat ears and tails to school.

So is it just me thinking that the stereotypical "High School" the shows and media show is outdated, or do you think that today's generations are just more accepting of people different than ourselves, resulting in less bullying and cliques in High School?

In my high school, theres 4200 students. Bigger than most towns. I definetly think what tv comes out to show is so outdated and overrated now. We don't have these cliques, we just all have our few friends that we hang around. Cheerleaders and teams don't only sit with each other. We all get along and respect each other. Of course theres a little drama sometimes but its pretty harmless. We're all pretty mature enough to laugh it off. The freshman are the only ones that are still outta their normal elementary school routine. Students have become more accepting of people different than themselves for sure.

There's roughly 2000 kids in my school, and I agree with you! There aren't really any "cliques" in my school either, and movies are very outdated when it comes to high school life...There's a variety of different people. I definitely agree with you about middle school. I HATED middle school, but I absolutely love high school because people are more accepting of differences in people compared to themselves. We have people who are jocks and the artsy kinds you mentioned, and everyone gets along well and accepts each other for the most part. I have a huge variety of friends who are completely different from each other but we all get along well rather well. There is still some bullying...but nothing compared to what is shown on tv. There is less and it's usually not near as bad as what is shown in different movies.
