How can I clean/restore the finish on a 1908 .25 Colt Vest Pocket pistol?

This was my grandfather's gun, now I have inherited it since my father's passing. Also, will I ruin any value of this gun by doing so?

Update:

This gun is not rusted, just a little pitting by the muzzle/barrel. I've been seeing pictures of them under Yahoo images and many of them look so damn clean and shiny compared to this one. I have searched the Colt website and have determined this gun was manufactured/shipped in 1909. Thanks to everyone for the answers and help you give.

Never remove the patina. It destroys the value and character. Only do so if the gun is rusting. If it is pitted just use some solvent. And it would be wise to clean out the bore.

Just clean it. Do not take off the rust with steel wool or do anything like that. Just take it apart and give it a good cleaning with Rem Oil, or CLP Breakfree. You are a fantastic gun that will last forever.

That is one of the best .25 ACP pistols ever made. That gun is a work of art. Do not destroy its character by trying to get the rust off. Leave it the way it is.

I would just clean it. If you restore it, unless it is a pile of rust, you will decrease the collector value and the value of it.
