Why is religion so toxic to some teens?

I work at our local Family and Children Welfare Services. I'm a caseworker. My job is to work with and follow up on families where a child was removed from the home or had been in trouble with the law. The vast majority of troubled teens- I would say 99% of them were either born to unwed teen mothers, one or more parents were missing from their life, or else the parents are extremely religious.

Now, I can understand how being raised by a mother who is still a child herself can cause problems, or if a second parent is missing, but why the religious?

Religion has been touted as good and helpful. Yet I see adverse effects of it every day.

Why do you think this is?

Because when people are extremely religious they try and force those beliefs on the people around them. Now imagine if you were the child, your whole life you've been told that "god exists!" (or whatever the bases of the parents religion is) and then you get to your teen years and you see all these other religions, all these other ways of thinking, all these things your religion can't explain except by saying "because god made it that way" or something similar. And so you start to question the world around you, which is only natural, but then your parents start judging you for your lack of faith or perhaps you feel so guilty about it because you've been brought up never to doubt anything. It's this sort of conflict within ones self and home that can lead to rebellious behavior which can only get worse.

It is better to encourage your child to look at all religions and at science before making a decision, then they are comfortable that they made an informed decision and didn't just believe what their parents told them to.

Its because of the box religious children are stuffed into. When a child is told they can't do something, or its wrong to feel/act a certain way, they are going to do all that they can to test it out for themselves.

A little knowledge is a dangerous thing.

And for many "christians" all they have is a little knowledge. No wonder they get messed up.
