Vegans: do you eat mushrooms?

This is a question more aimed at vegans than vegetarians, who by nature are more discerning in what they are willing to eat.

Mushrooms are fungi. Fungi, somewhat surprisingly, are actually more closely related to animals than plants.

For most people I'm sure this is a non-issue, but I know some Vegans are extreme in their views.

Update:

EDIT: Btw, I meant no disrespect to any Vegan. I am merely interested in their views.

Fungi really are more closely related to animals than plants. This has been independently verified by numerous sources.

There are additional reputable sources within the Wikipedia link.

Update 3:

Ashley V:

Did you get your PhD from the 1960's? The three-kingdom system you refer to has been superseded. Revisions in the last few decades have placed Fungi in the tree of Eucarya, where Plants, Animals and Fungi are all closely related - but Fungi are more closely related to animals than plants.

Also, there was no need to be unnecessarily rude. My question was asked respectfully.

Not just mushrooms, but yeast. Draw the line at mould though.

The closeness of evolutionary relationship is merely a relative point. Something has to be close to animals since the animal kingdom arose later than Plantae, MOnera etc. We are still separated by at least 1 billion years of evolution and what's more it is the absence of the central nervous system which is the driving factor in making it ok to consume fungi.

Mushrooms are not animals and to say they are is ignorant. They are not in the Animal kingdom. There is no reason a vegan can't eat safe (non-poisoned) mushrooms. "More closely related" - how are you judging that? "Have you ever been one?" - -You don't have to have a past life as a mushroom to know that they do not feel pain. They have no nerves, no pain receptors, no brain, to autonomic or sympathetic nervous system.

Interesting question! Fungus is in its own kingdom, so it's not an animal technically. Yes, it feeds off of animal by products, but so do most plants. Dirt is made mostly of dead and decaying things. Yes, fungus is more closely related to animals than plants, but they *aren't* animals. Not all vegans eat mushrooms, tho. IMO, they are just plain old gross. lol

I'm vegan and I overheard on Joe Rogan's podcast about vegans being hypocrites for eating mushrooms because fungi is closer related to the animal planet. I'm torn fellow vegans, what do you think? http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC48023/

Vegans can eat mushrooms because they cant eat things that have come from/ produced by animals.

Although Mushroom is a fungi it doesnt mean vegans cant eat it. For example they can eat some bread but bread has wheat in.

  • Vegans aim to reduce suffering through their dietary choices, vegans are not using the scientific definition of animal when they say they do not eat animals or animal products, they are using the lay persons definition, this is because their position is not based on a scientific distinction but a moral decision. You are missing the point of being vegan if you think they worry about eating a mushroom. I'm sure there is a more scientifically accurate definition of vegan somewhere on the internet but its probably something along the lines of not causing suffering through their food choices (That's why all their products and websites say things like "cruelty free" on them).

Fungi are separate from plants and animals and even bacteria, so they are not closely related to anything living. Yes, I eat mushrooms. Yes, I will continue to eat mushrooms until science proves that they are sentient beings and can, without a doubt, feel pain and emotions.

Yes, I eat mushrooms. I love mushrooms. I've never met anyone who is THAT extreme in their views. I do, however, know omnivores who don't eat mushrooms because they are grossed out by the fact that they're fungi.

Most commercial shrooms are grown on manure, so vegans should not be eating them because animals are raised in slavery to produce the poo the mushrooms eat. and then they're killed.
