Hint about Valentine's Day?

I love my boyfriend, and anything that he would give me. But sometimes he has kind of an off taste in presents. Valentine's Day is also my birthday, so he always tries way harder than he has to.

How can I hint about what I want instead of the stuff he normally gets me? In the past he's gotten me chunky, expensive jewelry, which really isn't my style. Or, he promised to take me horse back riding when the weather permitted, and yet we have yet to do it.

How can I hint to him what I really want? I would much rather something small and more sentimental than something he thinks women in general want?

I mean, I'm not saying I don't want shiny jewelry or whatever, but it just doesn't seem as thought out.

Any suggestions?
