It's Sunday morning and someone refers to "next Friday". What do they mean?

Being that it was Sunday is what confuses me. If it was Friday the 14th, "next friday" would be the 21st. If it is Saturday the 15th or Sunday the 16th then what does "next friday" mean, the 21st or the 28th? Thanks for any light you can shed.

If they meant the 28th, I think they'd say "a week from Friday." But I usually ask, because people from different geographical areas have different 'rules' about it.

As Sunday is the first day of the week then "next" Friday would be the one occurring five days later. If it was going to be the Friday after that one it would be "Friday week".
