Career in law enforcement, help?

I'm 20 years old (21 in July) and I'm interested in becoming a police officer. I have my high school diploma and I'm currently a criminal justice major at my university. I'm a sophomore in school and I'm about to get into the major specific courses. I know that I will have to work my way up the ladder in this career and I was just looking for some tips on how to get started.

I've only had one speeding ticket, if that will affect my chances please let me know.

I've never been convicted of a felony or anything of that sort. I volunteer and I've never been in contact with any illegal substances.

I just want to help and protect people and provide for a family when I have one.

Any help from current officers or past officers is greatly appreciated! Thank you.

I became a police officer shortly after I turned 21. The best thing you can do in college is get a degree, and continue your education even after you become a police officer. Your speeding ticket will be nothing of concern. I had 3 when I was hired. We all do stupid things when we're young, and a police department won't care about your ticket.

My biggest tip of advice is something I learned first hand. Don't take a ton of criminal justice courses. Everything you learn in those classes you will re-learn in the police academy. It's a waist of classes. Take English, computer, and psychology classes. These are things you will need to know ads understand in the police world.

    Good luck

Continue to focus on getting a 4 year degree. Get the highest grade point average that you can. Many people would suggest choosing a different major. There are indeed many good majors for police officers and people that want to become police officers. Accounting, computer science/information systems, communications, English, forensic science, a foreign language, and psychology are just a few examples. Don't do anything illegal. Keep a good driving record. Maintain a good reputation. Don't get bad credit. Become the best writer that you can. Practice to improve your observation and memory skills. Become as physically fit as you can. Best of luck!

Excellent! you're going to school and you have a clean criminal record, one speeding ticket wont be an issue at all. Volunteer work is great, i'd suggest doing volunteer work that is involved with your police department, get to know the officers and let them get to know you. Also, try getting a job as a dispatcher or working in your county jail. Thats a good stepping stone to get into law enforcement.

You seem to be one the right track, and i don't think you'll have much troubles as long as you keep up the good work, and stay in good health. Good luck!
