Why Do Protestants Go To Group Bible Studies?

Before getting started, I respectfully ask that all comments remain to the point and free from insults, ranting or deriding others. I don't think that's much to ask.

Why do Protestants go to group Bible studies? This is aimed mostly at Protestant Christians.

Learning all about The Bible is a good thing so good for you for going. However, this behaviour still perplexes me because of your doctrine. Your doctrine says that everyone has the ability to discern scripture for themselves. Why do you go to others to learn? Why go in groups to learn from others?

Protestants cling to Luther’s doctrine of "Sola Scriptura" which is defined as;

"All things in Scripture are not alike plain in themselves, nor alike clear unto all; yet those things which are necessary to be known, believed, and observed, for salvation, are so clearly propounded and opened in some place of Scripture or other, that not only the learned, but the unlearned, in a due use of the ordinary means, may attain unto a sufficient understanding of them."

Now you may say that "Everything you need to know is clear" but then what are you going to learn about? Something "not important?"

Then there is the fact that so many Protestants talk about how all scripture is inspired by God (this is true) and right to learn and teach from (also true). They quote The Bible (proper thing) and say "All scripture, inspired of God, is profitable to teach, to reprove, to correct, to instruct in justice" (2 Timothy 3:16, but read 2 Timothy 3:17 for something else really important) which is why I am still confused. You are right in saying all scripture is good and good for teaching, but then say that even the uninstructed can discern it for themselves, and still go to lessons to do so. Why?

I don't mean to sound rude, but this practice has always perplexed me. Especially since many Protestants have derided me for saying the Bible is something that needs to be read with proper instruction.

Can someone explain this for me?

Update:

Quick Edit : To "Susanna Lives" Nothing trumps the Word of God, but The Bible itself says that it is not *the only* source of The Word of God.

To : "Anna P" Catholic doctrine can be supported by The bible, which is fitting since as Luther said, it is because of The Catholics Church we have The Bible in the first place. I'd be more than happy to discuss them with your and clear up the many misconceptions you have, but not here since this was about Bible study groups. Stay on point please.

Firstly, group Bible studies are important because each person may get a different application from the text.

Notice I did not say "interpretation".

Many of our discussions revolve around how the text is playing itself out in our lives or challenging us in specific ways.

It's far more than saying, "Well, Romans such and such says this ....".

Christian community is essential to growth.

Students need ancient languages, and a degree in Patristics to "study" the bible. People read and "opine." Verses will continually evolve under the "opinion system," many of them already becoming meaningless in regard to what the original texts meant. Humanity is o-so-clever. Any reader is free to "interpret" what he decides a verse means. The "word of God" phrase has become a nebulii without a hard center.

The Complete Concordance of the KJV (Nelson) 1957, is the word-locator biblical text research. This 2,157 page book is not a compendium of Commentators, however. Commentators compare similar verses in both Old and New Testament authors, a highly-prized way to study, and can be done individually using the Haydock commentaries in a Haydock Douay, combined with a Thesaurus and a "good" Encyclopedic Dictionary, such as one printed no later than the 1955-57 Webster's New World.

The Apostle Philip spoke to the eunuch Acts: 8:31-40, "Think thou that thou understandest what they readest? Who said: And how can I, unless some man shew me? etc." KJV & DOUAY

You are i'm certain aware that Catholics have Bible reading groups. But i believe the difference between our groups and Protestant groups is we read the Bible under Catholic understanding of verses and not under any impression that some lightning bolt of understanding from the Holy Spirit will open the words of the Bible to us as we believe that the Holy Spirit has already gave the Church the needed knowledge and continuous to protect the Church from error. Another difference is we do not believe it to be some magical like power from reading it and to suddenly discover hidden meanings and sudden new knowledge. The Gnostic's did that 2,000 yrs ago.

I've never been big on Bible study groups because while instruction on the Bible might be good for some- children and beginners- it is each Christian's personal responsibility to work through his or her own salvation. It's highly personal and some teachings in the Bible are made clear via parables. Matthew 13 verses 10 through 17. The book of John also teaches about man being "led" to God- by the Holy Spirit.

Their God is the bible... One of my protestant friend says they sin if they do not study the book.

The entire catholic doctrine, Cathecism of CC is based on the Holy Bible, Holy Traditons and teachings of our Apostles and Ancient Fathers.

Great question. Also, why do they use other books, such as a concordance and commentaries, if the Bible is so self explanatory. But, I see that you haven't received much of an answer!

Non-Catholic Christians (there are also Anabaptists and others) often believe that when we accept Jesus we are filled with the Holy Spirit that helps us in our discernment. I always wonder why Catholics believe that Peter was the first Pope (that's a stretch) and that we need an intercessionary to talk to God (we don't). Catholic liturgy is comforting for many people, though, which I respect. Catholicism has had more in common with older Italian/Roman culture than with anything else.

There is only one true, infallible status stone for the Christian, and that is the Bible. When that Word is placed in the mind, it provides a standard of truth which is always dependable. Every impulse of feeling should be tested by it. The total lifestyle, including words, actions, and thoughts must be brought under the supervision of that one great directional control center. It is no exaggeration to state that most deviations from God's will today are based upon either following feeling or following the crowd.

How important it is for us to study these two powerful weapons that Satan utilized with such devilish expertise. Both of them are rooted within man's deepest psychological needs. We often overlook the fact that our spiritual enemy has been studying human nature for almost 6000 years—quite a bit longer than the most successful psychiatrist in practice today. He has also experimented with our emotional weaknesses, using these to exploit us in our most vulnerable moments.

How many have fallen prey to his manipulative devices? One clear look at our flesh-oriented society provides the answer. Jesus saw it long before it happened and tried to warn his disciples and us about the strength of those attacks. He said, “Strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth into life, and few there be that find it” (Matthew 7:14).

On another occasion the Master asked this significant question, "When the son of man cometh, shall he find faith on the earth?” (Luke 18:8). In the same dis- course He declared, "As it was in the days of Noah, so shall it be also in the days of the Son of man” (Luke 17:26).

Obviously only a small proportion of earth's inhabitants will escape from the overwhelming deceptions of the last days and be saved. A little remnant, as always, will be more concerned about doing right than pleasing self, the crowd, or some other individual. The record of history consistently chronicles the story of that small company of dissenters who dared to reject the comfortable appeal of the crowd. The majority seem never to be searching for truth so much as for a smooth, easy, convenient religion which will allow them to live as they please. To them any doctrine which demands self-denial or a disciplined lifestyle is bad news

to study the bible god's word

we go to study the scripture and what the bible teaches not what another man teaches

the holy spirit tells every one what the meaning of scripture is

KJV: I John 4:1. Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.

KJV: I John 2:27. But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him.

we study the scripture so each of us can see what god is teaching not what the leader of the group is saying.

Why do you go to others to learn?

I am not sure why you asked this do not catholics go to church to listen to what the priests tell them to do?

why do catholics go to priests to be taught when priests are just other men also?

The ungodly tradition of Sola Scriptura has done more damage to Christianity than the efforts of all its enemies combined. Christ clearly expressed His divine will concerning His followers - "that they all may be ONE". Sola Scriptura combined with personal interpretation guarantees that Christ's holy will can never be experienced among those who follow this unbiblical tradition.
