Are the Olympics safe? Is their security being compromised by the withdrawal of the Nimrod?

Angus Robertson SNP for Moray has gone live with his concerns over the scrapping of the Nimrod compromising the security at the Olympics. This will quite obviously be of interest to terrorists, wouldn't you rather know than be left in the dark?

Update:

Rose, yes, i'm thinking of 7/7 too. There's no way any of our family are going down there even with the tickets we have been offered. You get a far better coverage at home anyway!

Update 2:

Shambo, yes, it's a terrible fear but knowing the legacy of Blair and Brown, David Cameron will hopefully have the time and the expertise of people who are able to circumvent those who want their 5 seconds of 'glory' before their ideology plays them false and they find that none of the virgins in heaven wants a murderer to spend the rest of eternity with. Stupid people, some unfortunately have been proven to be mentally disturbed and therefore abused in the worst possible way by their own family, given up as 'martyrs' when they should have been receiving counselling to make them well. Makes you wonder what kind of !women their 'mothers' are - not very nurturing obviously!

The Olympics will be safe, the biggest threat is by suicide bombers and they don't usually fly, you can bet that UK airspace will be monitored closes through the duration of the Olympics as with any large national/international event.

It's the people in the crowd with backpack's full of explosive that will be the threat.

Angus Robertson has his own agenda I was in london on 7/7 luckily not on the underground I will also be going to the Olympics if you boycott every big event because there might be a terrorist attack you would never go anywhere I think security will be tight there they will have a lot of intelligence that they will not release so personally I think it will be very safe

This may be a compromise. My first guess was the government would soon go to Washington and order a few planes from them to replace the hastily destroyed Nimrods. But to get bumped up the waiting list would be expensive so politically risky. I now would guess they'll call NATO and perhaps Germany, Netherlands, France or one or two other countries will provide airs surveillance.

I certainly think that the Olympics are are cause for concern, as terrorist attacks will be at the forefront of the security services agenda.

I will however say this, the main threat is likely to come from 'home grown' fanatics and I have no doubt that those fanatics will receive help from dissident IRA factions.

Nimrod? wouldn't make the slightest difference.

Though the end of the Nimrod is a travesty,it would stop terrorists.

Be thankful that the Olympics are going to be a disaster anyway. It deserves to be,as it's called the 'London Olympics' which is a big 'F**k you' to the rest of the country.

To be honest I don't know but it don't sound to clever and its not sending out the right message is it, but you what will happen don't you, a few months before the opening ceremony there will be a security scare of some sort, and guess what will happen then, the government will be forced to buy some American surveillance aircraft at great cost, you can see it coming.

You couldn't make it up, its like chopping off one of your toes before a marathon, its barmy, its stark raving mad,,,You couldn't make it up, huh huh huh.

Helen I too think the gravest threat will be from some suicide bombers. I guess we have Blair and Brown to thank for this legacy.

We can rest assured that Ireland is ready to take up the baton if the worst comes to the worst. The O'lympic flame will continue to burn no matter what.
