UK: Is it legal to force a woman to use Mrs or Miss?

I recently applied for a job and put the title Ms. I am married, but I have used this title both before and after I got married. The recruitment officer told me I had to either put Miss or Mrs so they could tell wheter I was married or not.

Is this legal?

It is illegal for anyone to use your marital status to help them with their decision whether or not to give you a job. Most employers don't even ask because they don't want to be accused of using such information to make a decision. Whether you are Mrs, Ms or Miss on your application is up to you and shouldn't have any bearing on your application. The employer should have no interest in your marital status. I would suggest the recruitment officer is mildly remedial.

You don't have to put anything, but putting Ms might (wrong, I know) give some consternation to the person reading the application, irrespective of their sex. It looks like you're holding something back and that sets you back somewhat before the application's even been read.

If your name is unmistakably feminine, then why bother with a title? You're not giving anything away by doing that and, crucially, you're not coming across as someone who wants to hide something.

Of course, it's a little more difficult if you're filling in a tick-box - but, ultimately, it's entirely your own decision - legality doesn't come into it, although prejudice might.

It isn't usually necessary to include marital status unless it's relevant to the job (which the employer would have to justify). Anyway, it's common practice for HR departments to remove personal information before assessment to prevent discrimination. It is illegal to discriminate on the basis of marital status.

I don't think that a recruitment officer would be able to demand you reveal your marital status. I'd avoid a title if at all possible.

Of course its not legal... Mrs means you HAVE been married but you may not be currently, Ms has been in regular use for many many years and is perfectly acceptable...

No it isn't legal, because if they make recruitment decisions based on whether or not you're married this constitutes unlawful discrimination.

particular it is going to likely be worse for the girls. lots of those marriages are in fact in basic terms a manner of merchandising the daughter to an older guy who will then be allowed to stay interior the united kingdom. hundreds of little ones are pressured to marry human beings they do no longer comprehend by utilizing ignorant mum and dad who care greater for custom and money than they do for his or her little ones. If sharia regulation is authorized the girls might have as little precise to justice in Britain as they do in Pakistan.
