A question about electricity?

Hey everybody,

I'm writing a series of science fiction/horror stories, and I need some help regarding electricity. In these stories, there is a group of human/alien hybrids that are significantly more intelligent than human beings, capable of detecting electrical signals produced by all sorts of electronic devices, making them capable of tracking down the people using these devices and killing them. My question is, in what way would a person be able to use an electronic device, yet simultaneously block the presence of its electrical signals in the air? I assume that this would be different for a person using, say, an iPod, and someone using a computer plugged into a wall socket in a house. Do devices exist that can block out the electrical signals of devices in either scenario? Just curious. Thanks for your help.

Update:

Thank you both for your answers, they're a big help. In light of them, I have a new question; is the electrical signal produced by the human body weaker than that of electronic devices? I assume that it is, but also that it would depend on the amount of "juice" the device in question requires to function. These human/alien hybrids are limited to being able to detect these signals within a certain radius, I have yet to determine that; probably within a mile or so, maybe a little more. The thing is that there are some humans in these stories that do the exact same thing to the hybrids, in combination with GPS, by using computers to monitor the locations of these hybrids around the city. So maybe as long as they keep their computers in Faraday cages/rooms, they can see what areas of the city they can move through, without their activities being detected. Also, these stories take place in 2031, so I suppose I could come up with some sort of advanced technology that could help them.

Update 2:

(It's a long and complicated story, so I won't get too into it.) Anyway, so the question being, does the human body produce a stronger or weaker electrical signal than, say, a normal computer?

Since a Faraday cage would block all incoming and outgoing signals, the radio or other device could only be used when it was removed from the cage.

One way to limit the amount and direction of radio waves from an antenna would be to use a highly directional antenna such as a parabolic one, or an antenna shaped like the TV antennas on peoples houses (I forget the name of this style at the moment.) These antennas would beam signals mainly in one direction, and also receive best from the same direction.

This would allow some radio use as long as you knew where to aim the antenna. It's like a compromise between having an omnidirectional antenna that broadcasts in all directions and the Faraday cage which doesn't allow any broadcasting.

    Additional...

They say the human brain uses about 10 watts of power. A simple citizens band radio transmits 4-5 watts and can reach about 5 or more miles with a simple antenna. But the human body does not have an antenna to radiate the power so I think we could not be detected nearly as easily.

    1. in what way would a person be able to use an electronic device, yet simultaneously block the presence of its electrical signals in the air? send another signal, one to prevent it from coming further or one to make it bounce back where it came from or one to allow it to come but mess up what it will do when it gets to its destination.

    2. is the electrical signal produced by the human body weaker than that of electronic devices? yes. definately. no juice doesn't matter. and prayers dont work.

3.good luck on your story. get going on it, 2031 is only 20 years away...

A Faraday shield is the only effective way to block EM signals. The following talks about blocking external signals, but it works in both directions, internal signals will be clocked to the exterior world.

    wikipedia:

A Faraday cage or Faraday shield is an enclosure formed by conducting material or by a mesh of such material. Such an enclosure blocks out external static electric fields. Faraday cages are named after the English scientist Michael Faraday, who invented them in 1836.

A Faraday cage's operation depends on the fact that an external static electrical field will cause the electrical charges within the cage's conducting material to redistribute themselves so as to cancel the field's effects in the cage's interior. This phenomenon is used, for example, to protect electronic equipment from lightning strikes and other electrostatic discharges.

Faraday cages cannot block static and slowly varying magnetic fields, such as Earth's magnetic field (a compass will still work inside). To a large degree though, they also shield the interior from external electromagnetic radiation if the conductor is thick enough and any holes are significantly smaller than the radiation's wavelength. For example, certain computer forensic test procedures of electronic components or systems that require an environment devoid of electromagnetic interference may be conducted within a screen room. These screen rooms are essentially work areas that are completely enclosed by one or more layers of fine metal mesh or perforated sheet metal. The metal layers are grounded to dissipate any electric currents generated from the external electromagnetic fields and thus block a large amount of the electromagnetic interference. See also electromagnetic shielding.

The reception of external radio signals, a form of electromagnetic radiation, through an antenna within a cage can be greatly attenuated or even completely blocked by the cage itself.

it quite is all a large conspiracy. each and every a hundred years, the government promises one individual a large potential. you are the chosen one. you have been granted the present. you at the instant are like Pikachu. whats he says!

another thing to bear in mind is that humans generate electricity so they would have to constantly wear portable Faradays Cages (depending on the sensitivity of your Aliens)
