best math tutoring website imo. helped me through college calc 1-4 and differential eq.

five times the sum of a number and 3 is 10, translates into 5*(x+3) = 10

    which solves out to -1.

just read it like a sentence

five times the sum, so from that part you know you have to multiply 5 by a sum.

now you think a sum of what?

it then says of a number and 3, so you are trying to find the number, which you can call X, and the other number of the sum they gave you, which is 3

whenever they say IS, that is the same as equal/=

hopefully you can watch his videos and learn!
