Meaning of this quote? (From The Tortilla Curtain)?

I want to use this quote in an essay I am writing for school. I have an idea of what it means but I am not completely certain. The quote is this:

"-everybody had a right to live - but in terms of simple business sense"

I interpreted it as everyone who has common sense in business/is a part of the working class has a right to live (or to be respected? Seen as a normal human being?)

What are your thoughts?

Thank you.

First, you should discuss what the author means by "simple business sense." It may be simple to him, but for the rest of us, that is a very foggy idea.

All of us do have a right to live--in all senses. If I were you, I'd debate this idea of his, and tell us why all of us have a right to live--beyond business.
