Why does the fax machine disconnect me from the Internet?
I'm just sitting here playing an MMO... and every time my mom uses the fax machine's phone to make a call it, or even if someone picks it up... disconnects the modem. Lights turn red and all that.
This has been going on for a couple of months now...
I'm not sure about the splitter.... probably not.
My computer is downstairs, and the fax machine is upstairs in her room.
I do have cable though... that's whats so odd.

If you are using ADSL, is the fax connected to the phone line using an ADSL splitter? If not it will interfere with the internet connection. This applies to all devices connected to the phone line.

I would guess that you have the fax machine hooked up to the internet modem direct (or to the phone line direct) and same with the computer. To fix this problem you could see if you can run a router, and hook them both to it. I am not sure if this will help mainly because you lack any real details to how you have it all hooked up. You could also contact your service provider and see what they would suggest. All and all the problem you have is you have two lines hooked up to one output. You will need to get something that will allow you to run both lines on one output. Or get two separate lines one for the computer and one for the fax machine. Hope this helps. This is why I go with cable internet you don't get these problems. Then call them they have it hooked up wrong somewhere.
