Are CT scans in any way painful?
I have been having a lot of head problems lately and I might need a CT scan but I'm wondering are they painful in anyway? Also are there a lot of risks for having a CT scan?

No pain whatsoever and they are very quick. I have had several ct scans and they have not had any adverse effects on my health.

The scan itself is not painful; but sometimes they do need to inject a radioactive dye into your body. This process can sometimes be a bit painful (as it involves an IV and a dye that will burn slightly), but it is not that bad. Besides, there is no guarantee you will need the dye, as that depends on the specific test being performed.
There is really no risk to having a CT scan. Technically, it can increase your risk of developing cancer, but that statistic is not really accurate. The reason why is this: CT scans (3 or more in your lifetime) cause cancer in 1 in 2000 people; however, in the general population, your chances of developing cancer is 1 in 5. So, really, the 1 in 2000 statistic is insignificant because even if you did not have a CT scan, your chances of developing cancer in your lifetime is 1 in 5 (general population statistic).

No..having a CT scan is not painful at all..And as for any risks...there are always risks associated with almost every medical procedure..And..having a CT scan? The most you might have to worry about is radiation..And, the technician(person who does the CT scan) will advise you of any/all risks associated with having your CT scan.Good luck and I hope everything comes out ok after your CT scan.Take care..

The only time you would get an injection into your spine is if they are doing a CT myelogram of the spine. Those are not done very often anymore. The contrast would be injected under direct visualization via x-rays. They are generally not very painful, as they numb the back first. All other contrasts are oral or by IV (accessed via a vein usually in your arm, so it feels like a shot). The contrast can make you feel funny. Typical experiences are a hot/flushed feeling lasting less than 30 seconds after injection. Some people feel nauseated for a very brief time. In the last five years, I cannot remember anyone vomiting or getting hives in our facility because of a contrast injection, but it can happen. The IV contrasts have greatly improved in even the last 5 years. You could be given this contrast if you were having an exam of your brain, chest, abdomen or pelvis. Oral contrast is taken by mouth to visualize your digestive system. You would need to drink this if you were having an exam of your abdomen or pelvis. Other than some people not liking the taste of this stuff, it is not harmful.
