Broken USB Jack Assistance?
One of the USB jacks on my laptop has broken. The little plastic piece inside the jack seems to have broken off. The connection still works, as long as long as the plug is held in place or remains stationary while using a USB device. If I try using a device such as a keyboard light, the plug moves around & loses contact. As a result I don't use that port for an external drive, etc. that needs a constant connection.
I'm wondering if the jack can be replaced or fixed. If it doesn't need to be soldered, I could probably do it myself. Thanks, for any help.

There are a couple of solutions. Get a computer technician to install a new usb port which might cost more than it is worth or you could get a USB hub to plug into another port and it will give you more USB ports than you had before. An externally powered hub can handle more than a computer powered hub. Be aware though if you go for this, some devices don't like being connected to a hub. Scanners are bad for this. Keyboards and mice seem to work just fine as they don't draw much power. A DVD burner or external hard drive might be another story though.

You can install a USB hub that has several jacks in another port. Or simply have the USB port replaced. It is soldered to the board and thus needs a technician to remove the old one and replace it. You could call a few repair shops in your area for an estimate (ball park figure). Have the manufacturers name and the model number handy. Contact a dealer that works on your brand name laptop so that they will be more familiar with what the job entails.
