Will Betelgeuse become a black hole?

The star is predicted to go supernova soon, will it become a black hole, and if so what affect will it have on earth (if any)

Update:

I know its not predicted to become a black hole, this is just my curiosity running wild. Thanks for the incite though.

    I too ave read that Betelgeuse will become a neutron star.

    But Betelgeuse has a mass equal to 20 times our sun.

    Therefore my thinking is that it should become a black hole.

    Either way here is little difference in the initial explosion.

    An enormous amount of matter will be ejected into the interstellar medium, maybe the equivalent of 10 solar masses.

    A portion of that will come our way.

    It is possible that the material will strip the earth of its atmosphere, because it will be traveling at a high velocity.

    Because we are located 640 light years away, the effects will be mitigated by that distance.

    Looking at supernova remnants, eg Crab nebula, it is seen that the distribution of the ejected matter is far from uniform.

    At this point we really don't have a good idea of what the result will be for earth.

    Current predictions are that we will find out in the next million years or so.

    At this point we do not understand the processes that occur in the lead up to a supernova. So predicting when it will happen is not possible. And there hasn't been a supernova in our galaxy since modern monitoring equipment was invented. So stars like Betelgeuse are being studied with more than just idle curiosity.

    It will not have any effect on Earth.

    Black holes don't "do" anything more than just attract local objects via gravity. Nothing is any different about a 4 solar mass star than a 4 solar mass black hole in terms of their gravitational fields exerted on distant observers like us.

    Betelgeuse is 640 light years away...no significant gravity or tides at that distance.

    Besides, it isn't predicted to become a black hole. Betelgeuse is predicted to become a neutron star post supernova.
