Is it too early to file an auto insurance claim?

Purchased car insurance and had accident the same day. This is tricky because it did not involve any other cars and I didn't have to call the police. Heres what happened: I was trying to make a u-turn on a one-way street. I hit some black ice car spinned around and hit the barrier that blocks the street off. Now the car won't start.

I'm not trying to commit fraud but on the other hand I don't want to seem suspicious. Should I wait a week then file a claim or wait 30 days? Either way I know my rate will sky rocket. If I file the claim within 24 hous of purchasing insurance I think they will deny it immediatley:(

Update:

When I say its a one way street I mean its a culdesac (closed at one end) so you MUST go to the end of the block and turn around. Like I mentioned I really want to file this claim today but I don't want it to be denied because it happened 5 hours after I got the new car. Yes it does have bad body damage now.

How about taking the car to the shop and getting an estimate for the repairs? You may be able to pay the repair costs out of pocket. Then you don't have to file the insurance claim and have your rates go up.

If you do decide to file the claim - no reason to wait. Go ahead and file it and be honest about what happened and when it happened. It is what it is.

Thats a difficult one, also I think the insurance company when filling out the forms detailing what happened, will be wondering why your making a U-turn on a one-way street, so by doing that you will have been to them driving down the wrong way at some point.

I wonder when you say that you hit a barrier blocking the road its a dead end street not One-way?

But all that it shouldn't matter, if you had taken out insurance to start what ever time of that day, and you have paid a premium either by debit card on phone or been in in person, as long as the accident had happened after the time your insurance started, technically a claim is feasable, tho waiting a few days than making a claim, and lieing on the form about the date thats fraud.

With insurance it is ALWAYS best to be truthful, insurance companys do there best not to pay out anyway, so slightest bit of wrong info and there pick up on that.

Also you don't mention any damage to your car or barrier, just that it won't start, insurance doesn't generally cover mechanical problems, that comes under warrenty when you bought the car, tho if it down to crash damage your out of luck there.

I think you should just go to the insurance, with the details of what happened and the time it happened, and as said earlier if it happened after the insurance start time technically a claim is feasable.

    Good luck

By waiting a week or 30 days and telling the insurance it happened later than it did - is insurance fraud.

Call them today and make the claim. There was no reason for you to not get a police report. People report single car accidents every day to the police.

You'll just have to take your chances with the insurance company. I don't see any reason for them to deny a collision claim. They're really only suspicious when it's a comprehensive claim so soon after purchasing a new policy.

There is nothing "tricky" about it. It doesn't matter that your insurance just went into effect. That should not be the determing factor of when or if you file. If you want insurance to pay to repair your car, File now ! your rates may go up but they also may not go up but I doubt that they will "skyrocket".

You should have called the police and reported the accident when it happened

By the way, there is no such thing as "black ice" ice is ice and ice like the water it comes from is colorless.

You can start a claim straight away, from the time the policy starts.

you will have to pay, if you are not on comprehensive.

Depends on how much damage is done, on whether to claim.

Your excess means, you may have to pay the first £100 or so.

    Read the Policy details.

Sorry to hear about your unfortunate accident.

Call your insurance company, when you think you are ready.

You must be in shock, at the moment and maybe panicking.

So, take your time to make your decision then, do what you think is best.

Weigh up the pros and cons - if it is simply that your car won't start 0 that is nothing to so with insurance.

Next - how bad is the damage - if it is only slight then weigh up the cost of having the work done against the increase in your premium.

If the damage is only £200 for example but your insurance will go up by £500 - take the hit and dno't bother

This happens: I once had an insured who legitimately had an accident 20 minutes after purchasing her policy. Go ahead and report your claim but be prepared for them to do a thorough investigation, because it's much more common for people to buy a policy after having a single vehicle accident. They may check your phone records; speak with your co-workers; whatever it takes to prove what happened: If you didn't buy the policy after the accident, just be patient and cooperative.

No, be totally honest and claim as per what happened. Back up your story with photo's, witnesses and character references. Your rate will go up, but much better then getting denied all together.
