Power steering pump stalls at cold start?

2004 KIA spectra - 130k miles. Recently power steering started to act up after timing belt and other drive belt change.

When starting cold in the morning, power steering will not start rotating with the belt and a loud squealing comes from belt running over the pulley. It then picks up slowly moments later.

The same happens when turning the wheels to the end(even in operating temperatures), power steering pump stops and belt squeals.

I tried flushing the PS and refilled. PS belt is tight enough.

Not sure what might be wrong. Help..

I would think about replacing the pump. The right way to check the pumps performance would be to hook up a pressure gauge. But the pump cost as much as it would cost to have the old one checked.

    The belt is too loose.

Or- you tightened the belt too much and finished off already marginal bearings inside the pump.

My guess, you need a new power steering pump. Take the belt off the pump and rotate the pulley by hand. If it is not smooth, you need a new pump.

hi did you have the belt tensioner changed at same time .if not that may be the problem if you did it may be that the pump it self is going. or the wrong belt was fitted.

I don't think the belt is tight enough, even though you say it is.
