In the poem "Red" by ted Hughes, what does the last line mean?

I just finished looking through Birthday Letters by Ted Hughes and in his last poem, Red, he says "the jewel you lost was blue." Can somebody please explain this line to me?

Hehehe, it was written in 1998. Obviously he's thinking back, and he mentioned pregnancy. Look at the lines before re: blue and then think about how they relate to all the red and white blood and death associations. You'll get it.
