What is the most effective way to wean a baby off the breast?

I am planning to wean my now 8 month old daughter starting in about a month or two (I just can't handle nursing anymore, for a variety of personal reasons). But she's such a nursing addict, I am unsure of how to make this process as easy on her as possible. I don't even know what the first step is.

Can anyone share with me how they weaned their own babies successfully and with as little distress on the baby as possible?

Start adding more solid food, so the baby is fuller, and omit a session every few days, replace with a bottle, or sippy cup

The 'best' and 'ideal' way is for a child to self wean.

If that's not possible for you. Then slowly take away one nursing session about every 3-4 days and replace with a bottle. Until she's fully weaned.

I'd also 'ask'. Would you consider exclusively pumping vs nursing? Would that be easier on you? Or is the issue so bad to where you just want to quit altogether?

im in the process of weaning my 7 month old and he can go without the breast successfully now. I decided to slow down because I was losing way too much weight. I started out by breastfeeding him in the morning and when he got hungry again I would make a bottle for him and feed it to him as I would the breast. I started introducing baby food and he liked the flavor so that helped a lot. I suggest you breastfeed a bit before giving the bottle that way she isnt fussy and irritable. And once you see she drinks from the bottle try to just give her a bottle the next feed. What helped me was carrying my little one in one arm while making the bottle and now he knows that mommy is preparing his food. Good luck its difficult but beneficial to you and whatever it is you are going thru!

A technique i know of is to put your baby in the position where it usually takes the breast but feed it a bottle instead. It might not take to it strieght away but will eventually. Another tip is if they won't keep the bottle in their mouth for too long you should tap the top of the bottle to distract them and they carry on drinking instead

    Good luck

i would start slow, minimize the feeds take one feed out of the day my on is 13 mo and still breastfeeds however he is weaning himself slowly which i think is the best way so maby start now and take one feed out then start the next the following week if she seems stressed about it you could wait 2 weeks

good luck mama! it won't be fun during....but hang in there itt will get better!
